Fahmi hits the brakes on MCMC’s DNS redirection scheme

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been instructed not to proceed with the directive requiring all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Malaysia to implement Domain Name System (DNS) redirection.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that MCMC should continue to engage with all stakeholders instead, to gather views, proposals, and recommendations to ensure that a safer internet objective can be collectively achieved.

He added that issues related to online crime, including access to gambling websites, prostitution, and pornography, remain highly concerning and require a comprehensive resolution effort.

“The government will not compromise on this matter, to ensure online safety for Malaysians, especially children and families.

“However, taking into account the feedback received through MCMC’s engagement series and from the general public, I have requested that MCMC cease proceeding with the implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) management redirection method,” he said in a statement on his X platform today. — Bernama
